Homage to Ralph McQuarrie, Star Wars concpt artist by m0zch0ps
Homage to Ralph McQuarrie, Star Wars concpt artist
The painting has been posted earlier, but I wanted to show exactly where my points of reference lay with Ralph McQuarries original, his painting of the (then female) Skywalker or Starkiller, viewing the distant space port of Mos Eisley from a desert ridge, with landspeeder and droids nearby.
The briefing from Clark, the author, was simply to have his characters viewing a tribal camp on a full moon night, again, from a vantage point, and the similarity to the Star Wars scene was instantly obvious to me.
Other versions were considered but the Ralph arrangement was too good not to do, and it also gave an opportunity to pay homage, in a way sealing in a direct link to my own love of the movies, and bringing a connection in to the Prophets of the Ghost Ants trilogy, which also shares strong similarities to the Star Wars canon.

My humble homage to concept artist Ralph McQuarrie (1929 - 2012), who, in 1975, painted the very first visuals for a new movie proposal called Star Wars. Because of his fantastic input, the movie was greenlit for production.

No Ralph, no Star Wars.

Prophets of the Ghost Ants - Towing the Queens by m0zch0ps
Prophets of the Ghost Ants - Towing the Queens
Just completed a series of 16 illustrations for Prophets of the Ghost Ants, very interesting project to do, with a totally different slant on fantasy, and credit goes to Clark Carlton for trying something new and challenging.
Vorokoth asked why there are fallen characters with blood, which is a good question, as its not really obvious whats going on. It's actually something very real, and from our own world.
They're in mourning so to speak, and are wounding themselves to show their misery and torment.

I once read of the traditions of some Polynesian or Micronesian tribes, during the departure of their loved ones for long voyages, the wives and mothers would beat their own heads with rocks to show their suffering at their loved ones leaving, to make their suffering visibly manifest (with screaming and wailing to add), there are numerous layers of psychological and trauma involved, suffice it to say that the departure is exactly that, to reach the very point of dying for many of them.

According to records this is what happened to Fletcher Christian and his fellow mutineers during the journeys when they were fleeing the Royal Navy after taking the HMS Bounty and leaving Captain Bligh to sail thousands of miles in a rowing boat. Christian and crew sailed from island to island around the Pacific, they would settle for a few years and have families before having to hastily depart, and it was described that their partners would follow them in paddle boats screaming and scratching at themselves, and beating rocks against their skulls. Its a very persuasive deterrent not to go.

The eBook of Prophets of the Ghost Ants has now been published, here's the link - www.amazon.com/Illustrated-PRO…

Thanks. Maybe I have the market cornered at the moment, but there are some supreme artists out there, just a question of time before there's a whole slew of amazing insect art (for some reason the sculpture/ jewellery scene already boasts a lot of invertebrate specialists)
